Saxon Cello, Germany c.1890 (GE062) - $9.995 Canadian
This cello was the principal instrument of a National Youth Orchestra member of the UK who is now pursuing a soloist performance career.
It was made in the Markneurkirchen region of Saxony in the late 19th century. This area was one of Europe’s most important violin-making regions with established guilds, a tradition of apprenticeships and a division of labor among specialist craftspeople. Instruments coming out of the region varied in quality depending on the target customer, this is a particularly good example.
The cello is made from high quality tone woods; glorious maple descending from the back seam and very tightly grained spruce for the front. It is in very good condition; there are some minor repairs to the front and ribs (not unexpected for an instrument of this age) but none in any important sound affecting areas. All repairs are secure and the cello is in top playing condition. It is fitted with rosewood pegs, a Wittner tailpiece and a combination of Larsen treble and Spirocore Tungsten bass strings; the choice of many professionals today. The cello is unlabeled.
The playing string length (the distance from the nut under the scroll to the bridge) is a little longer on this instrument at 71cm; it is not a huge difference, but this cello would suit a player that prefers a larger playing zone with slightly longer extensions.
The instrument is easy to play and produces lots of lovely mature, clear sound.
The length of back is 762mm, high resolution photos available on request.
