Hungarian Master Cello, c.1930 (GE061) - $12,495 Canadian

Hungarian Master Cello, c.1930 (GE061) - $12,495 Canadian

This is a master level pre WW2 cello from an unknown maker. It was acquired in Hungary and our best guess is that it was made there, although it could hail from elsewhere. It is very difficult to tell the origin of this cello as it exhibits characteristics of a few different schools of violin-making. It is very finely made, by a single experienced hand and using high quality tone woods.

The instrument is unlabeled but there is evidence of a label being there at one point which begs the question why was the label removed? The usual answer to this question is for nefarious reasons – someone wanted others to believe the instrument was more special than it actually is. We feel this does not apply here as it is so well made using top quality materials - removing a label would only be devaluing it. There was all sorts of skullduggery going on immediately post WW2 in the violin industry including hiding & selling stolen instruments and removing labels from Axis member countries’ instruments (Hungary being one), owing to the contemptuous feeling for these countries at the time. We are in the area of speculation here, what is clear is that this is a very fine master level instrument which you feel should have a single maker’s label.

The cello is in good condition with no repairs to the front or back, there are, however, repairs to the lower rib, these being well hidden. It has a gorgeous honey colored ground and varnish applied which really enhances the beauty of the instrument, especially the back.

The sound is solo performance level; full, complex and effortlessly projecting. There would be no issue with patrons located at the back of the room hearing a performance with this instrument.

This is a rare instrument which would appeal to an advanced student or performing professional.

The length of back is 755mm, high resolution photos available on request.
