This is a modern Romanian cello made in the French style following Albert Deblaye and bearing a Deblaye label. It is a very attractive instrument, finely made from quality tone woods and exhibits an attention to French detail. This includes ‘bee stings’ in the corner purfling, delicately shaped ‘f’ holes wings and a fine black line carefully painted around the edges of the scroll and rib joints – a typical French feature.
Albert Joseph Deblaye was born in 1874, he apprenticed under several Mirecourt workshops before moving to Toulouse and joining the Gaulthier workshop. He established his own workshop in Mirecourt in 1900 working closely with H. Meunier.
The instrument is in very good condition with only one minor crack repair. It has had a new fingerboard, sound post, bridge, tailpiece and carbon fiber endpin fitted. It is set up with a combination of Soloist and Original Larsen strings. The sound is full and clear and resonant.
The length of back is 756mm, high resolution photos available on request.
